"The ones where Amelia was by herself with him," Benjen answered, waving the issue away. "How can I help?"

Of course that was what he meant. She felt selfish again. "I'm sorry..." I shouldn't have left her alone... I should have told her not to go... I should have have brought men that I knew were trustworthy... She didn't know what to say, especially since she only knew Amelia as of yesterday, and he had known her gods knew how long. "I wish I had something to tell you about it, but I don't. I came to see how she was, actually. My father was supposed to accompany me, and we were going to formally thank the north for helping me come home. I don't know if he understood that it was mostly Catherine Mallister, you see, and..." She stopped, realizing she was rambling, as she often did. "Sorry. Could I see her? Is she alright? Amelia, that is."

"She is alright; sleeping a lot," Benjen informed her. "The maester has been in an out, tending to her wounds. She has a few bruised ribs so she won't leave the bed for a while." He turned around again to study Arania. "I did not think you looked strong enough to lift a mace."

"Oh, I wouldn't want to disturb her rest!" Arania exclaimed. She hadn't thought that Amelia could have been injured so badly. The most visible wounds were the cuts on her backside. She didn't let her thoughts travel that path. She blanched when he mentioned the mace. "Nor did I. If I tried to lift it now, I probably couldn't. At least not so high, to swing with so much force..." She looked into his eyes. "I guess she told you everything? I couldn't even tell my father everything."

"She has lost some of her memory it seems," Benjen explained. "So she could not tell me all. I had some of it from Catherine... I assume you will want to know if I killed Meghan Lannister?"

Such an abrupt change of subject, and all thoughts of Amelia and the Limper went out of her mind. Arania wasn't going to bring it up herself but, since he had mentioned it... "I don't think you did it. But I cannot deny that I am curious about what happened. If you care to tell me, I will listen to you," she said with sincerity.

Benjen nodded, returning his gaze out of the window. From here he could perfectly view the spot where Meghan had fallen.
"Technically... yes, I was responsible for her death. In an indirect way," He started. "The man who killed all the people, who sacrificed them in the Sept... one of his henchmen had Meghan at the top of the building. He told me that if I let him live his henchman would let Meghan go." Benjen shook his head. "The man was insane. Likely he was lying. And I could not let someone like that live."

"O-oh." Arania did not know what to say to this. It was obvious that what had happened in Sept and with poor Meghan weighed very heavily on the Prince. "That was a difficult choice. Why Meghan, of all people?" She sighed. She'd met Meghan once or twice, years ago. She had been all goodness and light, and she hadn't lost her charming innocence even as she matured into adulthood. It almost annoyed Arania, really, but she couldn't manage to hate her. No one could ever hate Meghan.
"She was too good for the likes of this world. May she rest in the hands of the seven."

That last part seem to make Benjen wince but he remained quiet. "You can choose to believe the story or not. No doubt there are already a million rumours about how I turned into a wolf and ripped her heart out; how I myself pushed her from the spire, in league with the maniac."

"I believe you. You don't seem the type to do unnecessary violence." She peered out the window as well, trying to establish what Benjen was so focused on, if anything.

Benjen nodded, turning to look at Arania. "I am sure Amelia will be awake soon. Once she is I can send someone to inform you."

"I would greatly appreciate that." She looked at her hands, twisting her fingers together nervously again. "Do you think it will come to war? The Limper said he was meant to start one...and Lord Ty- some people think it will be war between the North and the Goldlands, now."

Benjen made no indication he has spotted the faux-pas. "Over Meghan? No, it wouldn't make sense. A lot of people will be angry but it won't lead to war... unless all the lords are idiots."

"From the lords I know, then, it wouldn't surprise me," she said bitterly. "Who knows what they will decide. I am sure some of them would like a third War of Succession, to promote their own ends. Meghan would just be an excuse." She chewed her lip. "I guess negotiations will begin in earnest now."

"My father and the other kings and rulers are talking," Benjen replied, looking back out the window. "He thinks that we should go on as before so as not to show Cassadar that we are affected. Easier said than done."
