Kal hasn't bothered with a glass; the bottle is glass after all. "No, I think you're extremely brave. Too trusting, maybe, but brave." he continues swigging from his bottle. "Definitely braver than any woman I know."

"You're too kind. Have you never met Catherine Mallister?" She watched him drink, straight from the bottle. It amused her a little. "But really, that's kind of you to say. I certainly don't feel brave. I feel like I should go home and keep to my books and my letters and stay in the Hightower until I die." She paused to drink, then added bitterly, "Of old age, not because some Dornish bastard wanted to play a game."

"You're too pretty and young to think like that. And Frances will never mess with you again." He puts a hand on her shoulder. "I'm not hurt that bad."

She looked at him, studying his face. "Are you proposing to follow me around, and make sure I don't trust the wrong man again?" She left alone the fact that he had called her pretty.

He breaks eye contact to take another drink. "Maybe you just need to trust the right one for once."

"Are you trying to imply something, Kal Stark?" It wasn't that she would mind if he was the "right one," just... she frowned, thinking of the banter that had passsed between Kal and Frances as they stood over her paralyzed body. She crossed her legs unconsciously, just thinking of it.

"I'm not very good at it, am I? It's why I stick to swords for the most part." He touches the uninjured side of her face with the same gentleness as when he'd cleaned it. "But you can trust me. I don't fight living legends for just anyone, you know."

She gripped the glass so tightly that her knuckles went white. "It isn't that I wouldn't like to," she began, "but..." The words came out in a torrent, then. "I was paralyzed, not deaf. Don't think I didn't hear what you two said to eachother. 'Gratitude sex'." She scoffed.

"You read a lot, right? There's a different language you use when you write that would never use talking. When you're trying to talk yourself up into a deathmatch with Frances Sand, you have another language; one where you sound like the grimmest, most manly man on the planet." He looked her over. "It's all to hide the fact that before something like that, we're terrified, and the only way to not let our opponent know is to say what they expect to hear."

He was right, of course. And she wanted to believe him, of course. She stared at him, searching for some clue that would tell her the right thing to do. "What do you expect to hear from me?" she said quietly.

"Say you trust me." Kal's hand cups her chin very gently to point her eyes directly at his.

She looked into his eyes, searching them for some hint of betrayal. "I..." She had gone with him out of the Keep, to his tent, with her hand in his. Of course she did. "I do trust you," she admitted.

Kal leans in and kisses her very gently on the lips, not pressing to hurt her teeth. "It's all right, Arania." His hand holds the uninjured side of her face like she's made of porcelain.

She was surprised when his lips met hers, so gently and carefully, like a whisper. Nothing at all like that acolyte who'd fumbled at her in the stacks, years ago, in Oldtown. As he pulled away, she found her lips parting, ever so slightly. His breath smelled of the wine they had been drinking. Still, she was afraid. "And now?" she murmured, her pale blue eyes meeting his again.

His eyes are clear and grey and sharp, and his hair tousles about his head somewhat like a mop. "That's for you to decide, Arania." He leans in a little closer, still sitting on the cots and her on the chair. "What do you want to be now?"
