He chewed thoughtfully, pretty sure he'd done things worse than that. "Worked for the queen. You know," he said, trying to recall a part of his previous job that hadn't included torture or subterfuge, "boring, courtly stuff. I was the captain of her guard for a while." He glanced around the hall for a short while, then turned back to the girl, her name momentarily escaping him. "Does your family feel particularly bad about your red priest being shipped off?" he inquired.

"Not really," she said. "Most of our smallfolk followed the red god, but we stayed loyal to the Faith," she said. "Many families did." She looked about. "He was a nice man, though, really. Really cared for feeding the poor. Captain of the Guard doesn't sound boring," she admitted.

Cedric seemed to approve of the first part. "And now he can care for feeding them in the east. Lots of poverty to go around there, too. Though I imagine we can improve the situation here in the years to come." He drank more ale and helped himself to dessert. "You're right, it doesn't," he told her with another wry smile as he wiped his hands on a cloth napkin. "Really trains the eye," he said, pointing to his green ones to emphasize it.

She smiled. "What was the most dangerou thing you had to do?" she asked. "Surely you hunted down notorious outlaws or the like?"

"No, that kind of work's usually left for bounty hunters and lesser lords in need of money or security round their lands," he replied. "I hunted down the queen's adversaries." He gave a short chuckle. "I did it for a long time. After a while, there is no scale." He paused for a moment. "But enough of that, what about you? What is it you like to do around here?" he inquired.

She shrugged. "Not much, really. I read a lot, play the harp, ride horses...I fear there's little chance for adventure for a lady here, with the Kingswood bandits everywhere. The forest is thick with them; they can hide months in the dells and bogs."

"Well then, it seems like there's game in these woods after all," he announced to some of his men nearby before turning back to the girl. "We'll hunt them down soon enough. Nothing quite like a good spring cleaning." He washed down the last of his ale and seemed to consider whether or not to get more dessert. He decided not to.

The girl nodded. "You hunt bandits?" She said. "These ones are very dangerous. They've killed many reeves out to find them."

"And so their confidence will be their downfall," replied Cedric. "Can't have them prowling in our woods, now can we? What's the word on their numbers?" he asked.

"You know smallfolk," she said. "Two or two thousand. My best guess, based on what father used to say, is maybe a hundred or so. I htink they have more people who join them when harvests are bad or the tax man makes one stop too many." She frowned. "I would prefer they were not in the woods," she allowed.

Cedric nodded thoughtfully and had his mug refilled after all. "It shall go right to the top of my list, then. Are there any other pressing matters here that need to be dealt with?" he wondered.

She shook her head. "I don't think so. The bandits being cleared would make it much more prosperous; no more buying security or losing shipments of grain and silver." She frowned. "There's also an expectation for a summer festival."

Cedric looked up in thought, seemingly calculating or considering if they could afford one. "That seems about right," he finally told her with a slight smile. "The people here deserve some entertainment after all this, don't you think?"

"They do," she said. "And, every twelth moon the festival happens. Regardless of what the weather decides to act like," she said. "You'll have to name the Maiden of Summer from among the local girls."

"Interesting," he said, faintly recalling the few sparse summer festivals they'd held at Grandview. "In the meantime, it seems there's plenty of things for me to do here. I will look into the bandit situation shortly."
