Character History:
Born the son of a slave in a wealthy elephant breeding estate east of Astapor, Kraznys early life was marked by hard labor and abuse. With the death of his mother after a lashing session applied as punishment for smuggling bread out of the kitchens to feed her starving infant, his father turned from a lovable figure into the harshest of man, becoming even worse than their master; he blamed Kraznys and his weakness for the death of his wife (aka breeding partner). The child and the father, along with ten other of their fellow slaves, toiled daily under the burning sun of Slaver's Bay; their duties varied from feeding to herding, to shit cleaning. It was not a task for the weak of body, nor mind; the beasts were sturdy and raised for war, but not even years of training made them predictable animals, one minute they'd be calm and gentle as pups and in the next you had a meter long ivory tusk coming out of your back. The death of brothers and sisters was an almost daily event.
At the age of fifteen, he was sold to a man from Meeren, who, impressed by his muscled figure, planned to turn him into a Pit Fighter. And so he did, fighting with the agility of one of those bipedal reptiles from Sothyros, stinging his enemies with a spear like a scorpion. Years dealing with the elephants might not have taught him how to fight, but they surely taught him how to survive against an enemy thrice his size. During ten years he fought many foes, from swordsmen from Yiti to the Black Champion from the Summer Islands (who mysteriously vanished a while after); but life in the pits is not all about enmity, there you can forge bonds of friendship unlike those of any other part of the world.
Although Kraznys, fueled by the most varied psychological scars, grew to enjoy the bloodbaths in the Arenas, he never truly accepted life as a slave; he knew that the world had much more for him, much more gold for him to make, much more blood for him to spill. Through the decade he spent in Meeren, he cooked a plan to get him out of there; it took him a while, but he finally convinced his brothers in arms to join his Rebellion. I the middle of the night the Slave Fighter broke their chains and made their way out of the Colorful City. Escaping through the sewers, they managed to avoid the city guard and consequently the death of many of their fellows (In fact, one died: "Old Greg", from a heart attack, in his sleep, before their escape had begun).
Out of the city, Kraznys led the men to the only place he had ever known... The Slave Master was taken by surprise as a band of the best fighters of the region flooded into his Estate. They pillaged and burned, butchering the local guards with no mercy. Kraznys had something in mind, so he went directly to the fields where the beasts were held; there he was faced with the largest elephant he'd ever seen, a white bull with tusks seven foot or longer, who stood well over fourteen feet. He was instantly reminded of a young calf he had taken care of ten years back, born an albino and sickly, the youngling was not expected to live more than a week; but Kraznys had insisted, and spent most of his day tending to the newborn. Mounting the gargantuan beast, and ordering his fellows to do the same, he led the herd out of the farm, into the hills of Lhasar.
Soon they realized that feeding themselves, plus a dozen or more of such creatures was no easy task for a mere band of brigands if they wanted to stand together and make money out of it, they had to go professional. They were fugitives now, sooner or later, the slavers would come after them; Braavos was the only place that would take, at least for the time, while their band grew in strength. And so they burned and raped and killed and stole their way North, repeating the process in each village they passed, now and then taking some new recruits.
They worked for Braavos for long, where they gained prestige and made a lot of gold; upgrading their rankings, breeding their animals, and becoming one of the most well-renowned bands of Northern Essos. It only changed when Kraznys heard about the Ironborn prospects in the Sisters; being paid a couple coins for skirmishing in the middle of nowhere was one thing, being paid a fuckload for pillaging the two richest of the Free Cities was a completly different thing.
