Morgan rolled her eyes at Sara. "I've no desire to get involved in that one. But for my part, I think the war was always going to happen, like it or not. And I don't see quite how the Goldlands could have stayed out of it."

Sara shrugged. "Not sent men, is the argument I've heard," she said. "But I have my mind on other events, as I said. Valyria and the east are the prizes for those curious about the oddities of the last decade, I think. I plan on making my mark there."

"I can hardly blame you for that. We women at the Citadel must fight tooth and nail to make a name for ourselves in the right sort of way. It will be better if we go together. We can be one another's chaperone." Morgan pulled a face. "Not that either one of us actually requires a chaperone, but we might as well pay lip service to the proper standards. And as I learned, men will use a woman's lack of proper chaperonage against her, given half a chance."
She regarded the quarreling men with a frown. "If the Goldlands truly hasn't sent men east...ugh, I hate to think of it! I cannot imagine that my brother would not wish to go. Well, perhaps they are simply delayed. Although, it occurs to me that we will require an escort. So we could take men east with us, couldn't we? If they wish to go?"

Sara shrugged. "We'll need to figure all that when we're allowed to go," she said. "My plan had just been to find one of his ships and show the captain the letter for passage. No one interferes with the black dragon's fleets, I don't think."

"I suppose not. It's rather difficult to argue with a man who rides a dragon. I'm sure we need only ask at the harbour and we'll find out all we need to know about the ships. But you seem to hold him in high regard, Sara. She gave her friend a sly glance over her tankard. "I begin to suspect you have a fancy for the Targaryen. Or is it merely academic ambition?"

"The feelings don't have to be mutually exclusive," she said with a bit of a smile. "If he lets me research old Valyria he could look like Maester Thorvald and I'd fancy him," she winked. "And he looks rather more handsome, I hear."

"I've heard that too," Morgan agreed. "But the old tales say the Targaryens were blessed with unnatural beauty. I wouldn't be surprised if you caught his eye, if he's inclined to seek female companionship." She sipped her wine. "For myself, I think the man would have to be madly in love with me and blessed with both a silver tongue and skill with a blade, as well as breathtakingly handsome, before I'd jump into bed with him. And I'd have to be madly in love too. So don't worry, I won't attempt to compete for Vhagus' favour. And besides, my heart belongs elsewhere."
She felt a pang of longing and tried to stifle it with more wine. There were times she felt lonely at night but she could not imagine laying with any man but Quentyn.

Sara chuckled. "Well, perhaps we can see. I'm still rather more interested in what they've unearthed over there. I've never been a quarter so far east...not even seen the Narrow Sea," she confessed. "So this will be quite the journey. Oh, that reminds me. I heard from another student that one former adept is visiting Oldtown. The northern man...Olyvar, I think?"

Morgan's eyes brightened. "Olyvar Manderly? I know him! I always wondered if he'd come back. He's the one who helped me, years ago. I'll see if I can meet up with him. I owe him that, and it will be good to know what he's been doing all this time. He was my first friend at the Citadel, after all."

Sara nodded. "Yea, it does sound interesting. We can find him without much trouble, I bet; his family has plenty of money so there's only a few places he'd be staying I think. We can look after class tomorrow?" she offered.

"Yes, let's do that." She took another mouthful of wine. Afterwards, she said "These are exciting times, Sara. Oh, but I am so pleased I haven't disgraced myself. It would be awful if I'd done nothing but make a fool of myself after everything Olyvar did to help me."
Another sip of wine. And then "Shall we drink a toast?"

"To success," Sara said. "And to the adventures to come!"

Morgan clinked her glass against Sara's. "To success, and adventure!"
