The enemy wasn't defeated. As it turns out, the Starks and Lannisters lost thirty thousand men, more than two thirds of the great army they had sent, and in grief the Stark king had burned his fleet at their losses. This runs contrary to a considerable number of viewpoints that had spread since then, of King Bran and his endless sail west.

Frowning, Morgan turned the page yet again. She wanted to find out what had happened to the dead men after their victory. They must have gone somewhere, after all.

They had simply faded away to the North; the victory had not been total but they had been far from extinguished. The tome ends as the Seven Kingdoms discuss uniting to re-invade the far north.

Morgan sighed and put the book gently aside. It seemed she wasn't going to be lucky today. She checks to see whether it looks like there's a third volume in the series that might be worth searching for.

It seems there is one, and maybe a fourth as well. The series hasn't been read in centuries, which is odd for such an exciting story.

Morgan turned to the man who'd helped her. "I'm going down to the archives. Could you make sure nobody touches my book, or the new copy, please? I think there's going to be much more to this story. Perhaps we've even found something that was once forgotten about."

"Sure," he said. "That'll be forty five minutes," he winked.

"You drive a hard bargain," Morgan said, though she couldn't help smiling just a little. "But why so interested in me, anyway? We've never met before now, and I don't even know your name. We female students are now but we're made the same as the men, mostly."

"Boredom," he said. "The Mouse doesn't let us out much. I'm Eric," he offers a hand.

She took his hand. "Morgan, as I've said already. I appreciate your assistance. But I had better run if I am to find those other books."

"Please don't, you could trip," he winked. "Talk to you soon." The books downstairs are being pored over. The Mouse looks to Morgan. "Date night over? Ready to go back to work?"

Morgan winced. "There's nothing between Eric and I, I swear it. Maester, I think the book I found belongs to a whole set. I found the first and Eric brought up the second but it looks like there is a third and fourth. I think we should look for them too. They contain stories I've never even heard before, which makes me think it's not so likely that newer copies already exist in the main library. What if..." She paused then took a deep breath. "What if they contained information that would change the world for the better? Or at least change our understanding of our past? The Archmaester who found them would be revered by the Citadel and probably even by the crown."
She smiled enthusiastically, having got a little carried away with her own speech. It would be wonderful to discover something new and exciting, after all.

The Mouse shakes his head. "Why d'ya think we do this? To enhance our knowledge. These books survived the purges of the last few centuries," he said. "What are these monumental tomes about?"

"They are a tale of the Westerlands and its wars but they also tell of the battle against dead men, like the rumours are talking about now, and an ice dragon. Gods be good, what if we find a way to help the lords and kings deal with this awful threat."

"Then we'd prove we were worth more funding," he said. "Find those books!"
