"It isn't," he confirms. "Which means the king clearly doesn't have to write the document for it to be valid, as you wrote the will naming yourself heir,@ he said. "What makes you believe that Lord Emmitt forged this document?"

Joanna gave a small sigh, as if she was squabbling with a simpleton over something that had already been established by every Kingsguard that had testified before her. "The king himself, actually," she said, "after Lord Emmett read his version of the will, King Brynden had him arrested, claiming he signed no such thing. I suppose it does't really help that our previous Lord Hand had the queen locked up during this."

"Sit down Lydden; we've heard enough of your idiocy." Lord Russ shakes his head, and the crowd is wondering what the fuck is going on. Joanna notices a man in guard's clothes on the upper balcony, resting his crossbow on the deck failing to aim it...

Which of you brought friends? she wondered briefly, and rose, keeping her eyes on the crossbowman in case he was going to fix his aim at her, ready to dart away, should that happen. "Guards!" she called, pointing at the balcony whilst attempting to move away from his sight.

The Knigsguard explode into motion as the crossbow clicks, and a bolt buries itself into Crakehall's head. Pandemonium erupts as the crowd scatters in the narrow audience hall. The Lord Commander stands in front of Joanna and looks about as his men try to restore order. "Stay down, m'lady," he said. After a few minutes the scene calms down. Crakehall is dead and Milo's throat had been slit during the stampede out the chamber.
The grim giant Hollis looks about before he turns to Joanna. "Guess he was guilty."

Joanna, a bit pale from this sudden scare, realized how bad the entire thing looked. Under slightly different circumstances, she would probably have found Hollis' comment funny. "Did they get the crossbowman?" she asked, trying to measure the situation now.

Ser Mandon Marbrand nodded his head. "Yes, my lady. He's headed to the black cells right now." He rubs his chin. "He kept saying no one can talk to you in such a way."

"Who was he? A guard?" she asked, frowning now. "Clear the court and take me to him."

"We haven't interrogated him yet," he said. The ord Commander clears the courtroom.
Joanna is escorted to the black cell, where the man is sitting, looking miserable, but he brightens when he sees her. "My lady," he said with a bow.

Joanna gave him a once-over. "Why did you do that?" she inquired. "Who are you?"

"I'm Geoffrey," he said eagerly. "I used to work for your father. We had to promise when you were all little that we wouldn't let anyone dishonor House Lannister," he said, his pattern of speech indicating he probably wasn't super bright. "That pig dishonored you in front of everyone. He had to die," he explained, blinking at her like a child fearing disapproval. He is about forty or so, maybe a otuch older, but he has big eyes that make him seem more childlike.

"Who's 'we'? You were a guard of his?" she asked patiently, still standing in the doorway. Her face didn't exactly betray much.

"Yes, yes, we all took the vow," he said. "I was the best crossbowman in his guard until you were five or six," he said. "But then I got hit on the head and they said I got dumb," he admitted sadly. "So I went to go be a hunter with my wife and my son. My son is a guard now, and he won't dishonor you!" His voice has the sure unflinching certainty of a child declaring a fact.

"Ah," said Joanna, taking half a step forward, and smiling down kindly at the man. "Your son is already in the guard? Did he help you perhaps? With Milo?" she wondered.

He smiles, but shakes his head proudly. "no, no," he said. "He went to go fight the Stranger with Lord Tomas. He told his mama he was helping settle some of the ladies who got took. One wants to marry him, even; his head works better than mine," he said, imparting a great secret. "But I'm still better looking," he winked.
